Temperature of artificial freshwater recharge significantly affects salinity distributions in coastal confined aquifers

چکیده
Artificial freshwater recharge is commonly used to mitigate seawater intrusion and restore salinized aquifers in coastal zones. While the temperature of recharged often differs from that aquifers, effects differences on water flow salinity distributions are rarely examined. Based laboratory experiments numerical simulations, we found response distribution cold prolonged. Cold performs better compared with hot mitigating confined aquifers. Hot induces a marked overshoot distribution: Seawater retreats first but intrudes back until steady state.

Abstraction, desalination and recharge method to control seawater intrusion into unconfined coastal aquifers
In this study, abstraction, desalination and recharge method and SEAWAT numerical model are used to investigate seawater intrusion repulsion in a hypothetical two-dimensional coastal aquifer to understand the relation of seawater intrusion with abstraction, desalination and recharge parameters (i.e. abstraction/recharge rate, wells distance and depth). Abstraction, desalination and recharge con...
متن کاملSeawater intrusion in coastal aquifers: Effects of seasonal variations in extraction and recharge rates
Over-exploitation of coastal aquifers causes seawater intrusion and eventually contamination of groundwater wells in many parts of the world. Artificial recharge of treated wastewater can be used to avoid or control seawater intrusion. A common characteristic of many coastal areas in Southern Europe is that most of the annual water demand, and hence the amount of water that can be used for arti...
متن کاملManagement of aquifer recharge in Lebanon by removing seawater intrusion from coastal aquifers.
This study investigates the feasibility of management of aquifer recharge (MAR) in Lebanon by designing well barriers to remove seawater intrusion from the fractured carbonate aquifers. Groundwater flow and saltwater/freshwater 50% sharp interface have been modeled along the coastal area using the Ghyben-Herzberg theory. The groundwater flow simulations have been supported by field transmissivi...
متن کاملMixing in confined stratified aquifers.
Spatial variability in a flow field leads to spreading of a tracer plume. The effect of microdispersion is to smooth concentration gradients that exist in the system. The combined effect of these two phenomena leads to an 'effective' enhanced mixing that can be asymptotically quantified by an effective dispersion coefficient (i.e. Taylor dispersion). Mixing plays a fundamental role in driving c...
متن کاملThe Potential for Artificial Recharge of the Tertiary Aquifers of the Latrobe Valley Depression, Victoria, Australia
The Latrobe Valley has an extensive monitoring network to measure the environmental impacts of mining and power generation operations. Regional groundwater and topographic survey data have been recorded for over 40 years. This data is used to calibrate mathematical models for the prediction of groundwater drawdown and subsidence. The concept of artificially recharging aquifers through re-inject...
